Lemon and tea tree are one of my favorite “clean” pairings. Bright, cheerful lemon softens tea tree's medicinal edge, and together they smell like a freshly cleaned home. I use this duo most in the diffuser and in homemade cleaning sprays, with a gentle skin roller as a bonus. Here's what each oil brings, how to use them safely, and six easy recipes.
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon (Citrus limon) is pressed or distilled from the peel. Its bright, zesty scent is traditionally used to lift a low mood, clear a foggy head and freshen stale air, and it's a favorite for natural cleaning. See my lemon essential oil guide and benefits of citrus oils.
Important: cold-pressed lemon is phototoxic. On skin, keep it at 2% or less and avoid sun or tanning beds on that area for 12 hours, or choose steam-distilled lemon, which isn't phototoxic.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) has a fresh, medicinal, earthy scent. It's traditionally used for blemish-prone skin, foot care, an itchy scalp and natural cleaning. Learn more in my full tea tree essential oil guide.
Ways to Use Lemon and Tea Tree Together
- In the diffuser: to freshen kitchens, bathrooms and stuffy rooms
- For cleaning: in counter sprays and with vinegar or baking soda
- For feet: in a fresh foot spray
- For skin: a gentle 1% roller for blemish-prone areas at night
Lemon and Tea Tree Diffuser Blends
Add one of these to a standard ultrasonic diffuser with the amount of water your machine calls for, and diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

- 3 drops Lemon

Clean and Crisp
Adults and kids 6+ (contains rosemary)
- 3 drops Lime
- 3 drops Lemon
- 2 drops Tea Tree
- 1 drop Rosemary

Fresh Air
- 2 drops Lemongrass
- 2 drops Lemon
- 2 drops Tea Tree

Lemon Tea Tree Counter Spray
For surfaces
- 10 drops Lemon
- 10 drops Tea Tree
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
Mix in a glass spray bottle and shake before each use. Skip vinegar on granite and marble. For more, see my lemon cleaning recipes and tea tree toilet bowl cleaner.
Fresh Feet Spray
Adults and kids 6+
- 5 drops Tea Tree
- 3 drops Lemon
- 1 tablespoon witch hazel or high-proof alcohol
- Distilled water to fill a 2 oz spray bottle
Add the oils to the witch hazel or alcohol first, then top with water. Shake and mist onto clean, dry feet or inside shoes.
Bright Skin Roller
Adults and teens, for nighttime use
- 1 drop Tea Tree
- 1 drop steam-distilled Lemon
- Jojoba oil to fill a 10 ml roller (1%)
Roll onto blemish-prone areas at night, away from the eyes. Use steam-distilled lemon so sun isn't a concern. Or try my tea tree and lavender roller.
Safety Tips
- Dilute both oils before using them on skin, and patch test first.
- Watch the sun with cold-pressed lemon (see above).
- Kids: keep topical blends at 1% for ages 2 and up, and skip rosemary-containing blends under age 6.
- Never swallow lemon or tea tree essential oil, and don't add them to toothpaste or bath water without dispersing them first.
- Pets: keep tea tree away from cats and diffuse only where dogs can leave the room.
- Store both oils cool, dark and tightly capped. Citrus oils and tea tree both oxidize over time, which makes them more likely to irritate skin.
