6 All Natural Bug Spray Recipes To Easily Make

Summer is coming and so are the bugs! Are you ready?

Get ready with bug spray recipes made with essential oils. I have six recipe options for you to choose from, three are kid friendly!

Here are the best essential oils for bug repellent, you can come up with your own custom bug repellent blend if you would like.

Best Essential Oils For Bug Spray

Here are the best know essential oils to repel insects.

How To Make Bug Spray

The base of the essential oil bug spray is witch hazel. I just find it works the best for spraying on my body. Click here for our witch hazel blog post to learn about its benefits.

I use an alcohol free version that is unscented, here is the one I like:

Some recipes call for apple cider vinegar but I find the aroma too strong and I really do not want to smell like apple cider vinegar so I do not use that in my recipes.

Step One: Fill 4 oz glass bottle with alcohol free witch hazel, leaving a little space at top (takes about 1/2 cup to fill).

Step Two: Add essential oils from one of the recipes below, or create your own blend from the bug repellent essential oils listed above.

Step Three: Place top on and shake well. Shake well before each use. Be sure to label bottle and write date you made spray. Best if used within 1-2 months.

6 DIY Bug Spray Recipes

I use 4 oz glass bottles for bug spray recipes. For teens and adults, I like to use 40-50 drops of essential oils total, this makes sprays about a 2% dilution level. For kids, I use about 20-24 drops of essential oils total, this makes sprays about 1% dilution level.

  • 15 drops Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus citriodora)
  • 15 drops Cedarwood essential oil (Juniperus virginiana)
  • 10 drops Geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens)
  • 1/2 cup alcohol free witch hazel
  • 4 oz glass spray bottle

#4 All Natural Bug Spray

  • 15 drops Citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon winterianus)
  • 15 drops Lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon citratus)
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 5 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita)
  • 1/2 cup alcohol free witch hazel
  • 4 oz glass spray bottle

#5 DIY Insect Repellent

#6 Simple Essential Oil Bug Spray

If you do not want to mess with essential oil recipes, you can buy a pre-made essential oil insect repellent blend. Here is one that is Kid Safe called Shield Me. Listed as safe for kids ages 2-10, contains Citronella, Grapefruit Pink, Geranium Bourbon, Rosalina and Patchouli essential oils.

Bug Spray Printable Labels

We created some bug spray tags for you to add to your homemade creations. It is a double tag, the front reads "Bug Spray", the back reads "shake well before use!". These are simple to use, just print out on white card stock, cut out, hole punch tags, place the tags back to back so when you flip the tag over you can read the back side, and attach with string.
