Beard care has become a huge market today with specialty shops popping up all over the internet. It's no wonder, a well-groomed beard is a must! No need to buy specialty premade beard oil blends when you can DIY...it's simple. Learn how to make beard oil with essential oils.

Beard oils are wonderful for moisturizing the skin and hair while also softening and taming hair. Beyond being a moisturizing agent, beard oil also doubles as a styling product for beards of all kinds.

Why Use Beard Oil?

Beard oil is a cosmetic product that is used to moisturize and condition the beard and the skin beneath it. Beard oil is an essential product for anyone who cares about the appearance and health of their beard. While it is possible to grow a beard without using beard oil, using beard oil can make the process of growing and maintaining a beard much easier. 

Beard oil is typically made of some combination of carrier oils and essential oils. Carrier oils are oils that help to deliver the essential oils to the skin.

Beard oil is often used to:

  • Treat dry skin, beardruff (dandruff of the beard), and itchiness of the beard.
  • Help to make the beard more manageable, softer, and less scratchy.
  • Help to prevent skin irritation and acne.

What are Carrier Oils?

Carrier oils are required for the base of the DIY beard serum. We are using sweet almond oil in our recipes because it is a gentle oil with a light texture. It is enriched with vitamin E and essential fatty acids which keep beard hair soft and supple. 

The natural oils can also prevent dry skin and beard flakes. You can choose a different base oil if you choose or have skin sensitivity. Jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil are two other popular choices for beard care.

I also add vitamin E oil to the beard oil for additional skin healing and nourishing benefits. If you prefer to keep it simple you can omit this ingredient.

How To Make Natural Beard Oil With Essential Oils

This basic recipe makes a 1 oz bottle of beard serum. Only a few drops are needed for each use, so one ounce will go a long way. This is also a good size to test different aromas and see what is preferred.

If you find a blend you really like, you can always double the recipe to make a 2 oz size bottle. Here is how to make beard oil.

Ingredients You Need:

  • 12 drops of Essential Oils
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Carrier Oils
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vitamin E (optional)
  • 1 oz Dropper Bottle

Beard Oil Directions

Step 1: First, add one ounce of carrier oil, like sweet almond oil, to the glass dropper bottle, this equals 2 tablespoons of oil. No need to measure it if you are placing into a one-ounce dropper bottle, just fill the bottle up leaving space at the top.

DIY Recipe Tip - Some other fabulous carrier oils for beard hair are jojoba oil, argan oil, or fractionated coconut oil. You can substitute as desired, or even use a blend of carrier oils to suit your needs.

Step 2: Next, add 12 drops of essential oils to the bottle. You can use a single oil, an oil blend, or make a custom essential oil blend. See below for some of our beard oil recipes and scents you can try.

Step 3: Add 1/2 teaspoon of vitamin E oil to the bottle. This is optional but adds additional benefits to your beard oil mixture.

Step 4: Place dropper cap on tightly, shake well to blend. This recipe is at 2% dilution, good for everyday use. Make sure to label your DIY recipe.

How To Use Beard Oil

It’s best to use the beard oil every day for optimal results, especially in the winter when it’s dry and our skin is more prone to drying out and causing beard itch. Use right after the shower or washing your face as damp hair and skin allow the follicles to absorb more of the oil.

Place a few drops of oil into hands, rub together and massage onto facial hair and skin underneath. Work the oils through beard to the tips, making sure to evenly spread the oil over beard and underlying skin.

Using a beard comb can help distribute the oil evenly as well. Brush beard and style facial hair with comb as desired. Some people may also choose to add a few drops of beard oil to their favorite moisturizer or beard balm.
