Best Halloween Essential Oils
- Warm spices: cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), plus cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) and ginger (Zingiber officinale)

- Dark and earthy: patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), frankincense (Boswellia carterii), spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi), black pepper (Piper nigrum)
- Spooky woods: pine (Pinus sylvestris), cedarwood (Atlas, Himalayan, Texas or Virginian), and the cool edge of peppermint (Mentha piperita)
My Favorite Halloween Oils for Diffusing
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
Sweet, earthy and a little mysterious. Its deep, musky scent feels like fallen leaves and old books, perfect for a spooky night in. See my patchouli diffuser blends.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Warm and resinous, used for centuries in ceremonies and spiritual practice. It adds an old-world, candlelit feel to any Halloween blend. Read my full frankincense essential oil guide.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
Warm, spicy and a little sweet, like chai on a cold evening. A drop rounds out citrus and spice blends beautifully.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Cedarwood
Soft floral meets warm wood. This pair is my go-to for winding down after the candy's been counted and the costumes are off.

Make Your Own Halloween Blend
Experimenting is half the fun. Start with 3 drops of a citrus, add 2 drops of a spice, and finish with 1 drop of something dark and earthy like patchouli or cedarwood. My essential oil combinations for your diffuser post has more ideas.
Halloween Diffusing Safety
- Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Here's how long to diffuse essential oils.
- Keep cinnamon, cassia and clove blends in the diffuser only. They can irritate skin.
- If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, skip the cinnamon, cassia, clove, clary sage and wintergreen blends. Monster Repellent, Spooky Woods, Black Cat and Apple Cider are gentler choices.
- No peppermint blends for kids under 6, and I keep wintergreen for adults.
- Leave a door open so pets can leave. Cats are especially sensitive, and Halloween is stressful enough for them already.
- Place your diffuser up high and away from the candy bowl, little hands and costumes.
- Never ingest essential oils.
