Tips for Diffusing on Thanksgiving

  • Diffuse before guests arrive. Run your diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes in the entryway or living room, then turn it off once everyone's settled.
  • Keep it out of the kitchen while you cook. A light citrus or fir blend in the next room lets the food smell like food.
  • Think about your guests. Little ones, a guest who's pregnant, someone with asthma, or a visiting dog or cat may be more sensitive. Fewer drops, gentler blends and an open door go a long way.
  • Keep the bathroom fresh. A small diffuser with a citrus blend is a lovely touch. Here are my favorite essential oils for the bathroom.

Holiday Diffusing Safety

  • Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Here's how long to diffuse essential oils.
  • Keep cinnamon and clove blends in the diffuser only. They can irritate skin.
  • If someone in the house is pregnant or breastfeeding, choose Family Time, Thanksgiving Joy or Thankfulness instead of the spice blends.
  • No peppermint or rosemary blends for kids under 6.
  • Leave a door open so pets can leave the room. Cats are especially sensitive.
  • Never add essential oils to food or drinks. Spices from the pantry are the way to go there.

FAQs

What essential oils smell like Thanksgiving?
Sweet orange, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger give that warm, spiced holiday feel. Add balsam or Siberian fir for a fresh, woodsy note.
When should I diffuse on Thanksgiving?
Run your diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes before guests arrive, then turn it off. A light blend in the living room or bathroom is welcoming without competing with the food.
Are cinnamon and clove safe to diffuse?
Yes, in small amounts in a ventilated room. Keep them to the diffuser, since both can irritate skin, and leave a door open so pets can leave.
Can I add essential oils to my Thanksgiving cooking?
No. Never add essential oils to food or drinks. Use regular kitchen spices for cooking and save your oils for the diffuser.
