Eucalyptus has a powerful, fresh and slightly medicinal aroma that refreshes the mind and clears the air. It's one of the most popular oils for diffusing, especially during cold and allergy season. Jump to the 10 recipes.

Eucalyptus Oil Benefits for Diffusing

Eucalyptus is traditionally used in aromatherapy to support easy breathing and a clear head. Its cool, crisp scent makes a room feel fresh and helps you feel more alert.

Here are several reasons to love this oil:

  • Inspires deep breathing
  • Freshens and deodorizes the home
  • Helps you feel focused and alert
  • Brings a cooling, refreshing feel when your head feels heavy
  • Helps keep bugs away
  • Boosts energy
  • Makes stuffy rooms feel easier to breathe in

Types of Eucalyptus Essential Oil by Loving Essential Oils

Types of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia but are now grown around the world. There are over 700 species, so check the botanical name on the label to know which type you are buying.

Here are four popular types used in aromatherapy. They share many of the same qualities; the main differences are their aroma, chemistry and how gentle they are.

Eucalyptus Radiata

  • Rich in 1,8-cineole and considered the most versatile eucalyptus oil
  • Comes from the Narrow Leaf Peppermint tree
  • Crisp, clean, true eucalyptus aroma that is softer and sweeter than globulus, with smooth camphor notes
  • A great all-around choice for diffusing

Eucalyptus Globulus

  • The most common type of eucalyptus oil
  • Comes from the “Tasmanian Blue Gum” tree native to Australia
  • Very high in 1,8-cineole, with a strong, deep, camphorous menthol aroma
  • The strongest-smelling choice, so start with fewer drops

Eucalyptus Dives

  • Also known as "Peppermint Eucalyptus"
  • Steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the Broad-Leaved Peppermint tree
  • A strong herbaceous, minty scent that is stimulating and uplifting
  • Read my EO Spotlight on Eucalyptus Dives Oil

Lemon Eucalyptus

  • Eucalyptus citriodora (now often listed as Corymbia citriodora)
  • Smells sweet and lemony, similar to citronella, and is a favorite in natural bug-repellent blends
  • Steam distilled from the leaves of the Lemon-Scented Gum tree

Which eucalyptus is best for diffusing?

Radiata is the best all-around choice for adults: fresh and clearing but softer than globulus. Choose globulus if you want the strongest scent. For homes with children ages 2 to 10, use lemon eucalyptus or Eucalyptus dives instead.

Safety tip: Eucalyptus essential oil should never be taken internally. Eucalyptus oils rich in 1,8-cineole, like E. globulus and E. radiata, are generally not recommended for children under 10. Lemon eucalyptus and Eucalyptus dives are considered kid-friendly for ages 2 and up.

You can use whichever type of eucalyptus you prefer in these blends, or mix two types together. Add one of the recipes below to your diffuser with the recommended amount of water. I like to use a diffuser with a 100 to 200 ml water tank, but use whatever size you have and adjust the drops as needed.

Diffusing around kids ages 2 to 10? Use lemon eucalyptus or Eucalyptus dives, and skip the blends with peppermint or rosemary (marked "For adults and kids 10+").

Safety Guidelines for Diffusing Eucalyptus

Diffuse for 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time, then take a break. Read more about how long to diffuse oils.

  • Children: Don't diffuse E. globulus, E. radiata, peppermint or rosemary around children under 10, and never apply them to or near a child's face. Lemon eucalyptus and Eucalyptus dives are gentler choices for ages 2 and up.
  • Pets: Eucalyptus is a known concern for cats, dogs and birds. Don't diffuse it around cats or birds, and always diffuse in a ventilated room with the door open so pets can leave.
  • Asthma and pregnancy: Strong scents can trigger asthma in some people. If you have asthma, are pregnant or have a health condition, check with your doctor before using eucalyptus.
  • Never ingest: Eucalyptus oil can be poisonous if swallowed, even in small amounts. Store it out of reach of children and pets.
  • On skin: Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond oil before applying them to the skin.

FAQs

Can I diffuse eucalyptus around kids?
Be careful. Eucalyptus oils high in 1,8-cineole, like Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus radiata, are generally not recommended around children under 10. For kids ages 2 to 10, use gentler lemon eucalyptus or Eucalyptus dives, diffuse for short periods in a ventilated room, and skip blends with peppermint or rosemary.
Which eucalyptus is best for diffusing?
Eucalyptus radiata is the best all-around choice for adults. It smells fresh and clearing but softer than globulus. Choose Eucalyptus globulus for the strongest scent, and lemon eucalyptus or Eucalyptus dives for homes with young children.
Is it safe to diffuse eucalyptus around pets?
Eucalyptus is a known concern for cats, dogs and birds. Don't diffuse it around cats or birds. If you diffuse it around dogs, use a well-ventilated room for short periods and leave the door open so they can leave.
How many drops of eucalyptus oil should I put in a diffuser?
For a 100 to 200 ml diffuser, 2 to 4 drops of eucalyptus in a blend of 6 to 10 total drops is plenty. Eucalyptus is strong, so start low and add more only if you need it.
Can I use any type of eucalyptus in these diffuser blends?
Yes. Any type of eucalyptus works in these recipes, and you can mix two types together. Just keep the safety notes in mind for kids and pets, and expect globulus to smell stronger than radiata or lemon eucalyptus.
