Essential Oil Aromas - Free Printable Cheat Sheet

Choosing an oil according to its aroma is a powerful way to use essential oils for aromatherapy. This can be especially helpful when creating oil blends and DIY recipes.

We have created a list of essential oils according to their aromas. The list is sorted into eight categories which include citrus, floral, herbaceous, camphoraceous, spicy, resinous, woody and earthy.

While some essential oils may fall into several categories, we picked one main category for each essential oil. Be sure to check out our free printable of this essential oil list.

Essential Oil Aromas

Citrus Aromas:

Citrus essential oils are fresh, fruity and slightly sour. Many have uplifting effects and welcoming scents.

Bergamot, Citronella, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Mandarin, May Chang, Orange, Tangerine

Floral Aromas:

Floral essential oils remind us of the flowers the oils came from. They tend to be sweet, bright and full of energy.

Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Ylang Ylang

Herbaceous Aromas:

Herbaceous essential oils are green, earthy scents reminiscent of the herbs they are extracted from.

Basil, German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Melissa, Oregano, Peppermint, Rosemary, Spearmint, Thyme

Camphoraceous Aromas:

Camphoraceous essential oils are clean, clear and purifying. Many are well known for respiratory support.

Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Laurel Leaf, Ravintsara, Rosemary, Tea Tree

Spicy Aromas:

Spicy essential oils are warm, exotic and very aromatic. A little goes a long way with these oils.

Anise, Black Pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Cumin, Fennel, Ginger, Nutmeg

Resinous Aromas:

Resinous essential oils have rich and deep aromas. Many have spiritual and healing qualities.

Benzoin, Copaiba, Elemi, Frankincense, Myrrh, Opopanax

Woody Aromas:

Woody essential oils have the scent of freshly cut trees and outdoor aromas.

Arborvitae, Cedarwood, Cypress, Hemlock, Juniper Berry, Pine, Sandalwood, White Fir

Earthy Aromas:

Earthy essential oils are reminiscent of the aroma that the forest floor emits when warmed by the sun.

Angelica, Patchouli, Valerian, Vetiver
