Choosing an oil according to its aroma is a powerful way to use essential oils for aromatherapy. This can be especially helpful when creating oil blends and DIY recipes.
We have created a list of essential oils according to their aromas. The list is sorted into eight categories which include citrus, floral, herbaceous, camphoraceous, spicy, resinous, woody and earthy.

Essential Oil Aromas
Citrus essential oils are fresh, fruity and slightly sour. Many have uplifting effects and welcoming scents.
Bergamot, Citronella, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Mandarin, May Chang, Orange, Tangerine
Floral essential oils remind us of the flowers the oils came from. They tend to be sweet, bright and full of energy.
Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Ylang Ylang
Herbaceous essential oils are green, earthy scents reminiscent of the herbs they are extracted from.
Basil, German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Melissa, Oregano, Peppermint, Rosemary, Spearmint, Thyme
Camphoraceous essential oils are clean, clear and purifying. Many are well known for respiratory support.

Spicy essential oils are warm, exotic and very aromatic. A little goes a long way with these oils.
